BHF Hosts American Institute for Roman Culture representatives in Sofia

Senior representatives from the  American Institute for Roman Culture (AIRC) explored Sofia on April 18, 2026 for a work visit hosted by the Balkan Heritage Foundation. Dr. Darius Aria, Director of AIRC, and Dr. Jeanne Marie Teutonico, an international consultant in architectural conservation and former Associate Director of the Getty Conservation Institute, were welcomed by BHF CEO Ivan Vasilev and Program Director Dr. Angela Pencheva.

The visit combined professional exchange with a guided tour of the capital’s urban core to explore the remains of the Roman city of Serdica – visible vestiges of the ancient settlement that underpins modern Sofia. The itinerary highlighted key archaeological features integrated into the contemporary streetscape, offering a close look at conservation challenges and opportunities for interpretation and public engagement.

Discussions during the visit focused on potential collaboration in training, research and site presentation. BHF outlined ongoing regional programmes that link field schools, capacity building and community outreach, noting synergies with AIRC priorities for education and digital interpretation. Both sides emphasised the value of international partnerships for strengthening local conservation practice and for raising public awareness of urban ancient heritage.
