BHF CO-FOUNDER Dr. NAYDEN PRAHOV ATTENDED THE 1ST SYMPOSIUM OF CONSERVATION FOR UNDERWATER ARCHAEOLOGY (September 20-22, 2019)
In September 2019 BHF co-founder and program director Dr. Nayden Prahov, attended the 1st Symposium of Conservation for Underwater Archeology (ISCUA) on the island of Formentera, Spain, organized by the Institute Balear d’Estudis en Arqueología Marítima (IBEAM). The Symposium served as a platform for the dissemination of leading research in the preservation of maritime cultural heritage. It also promoted the training of younger generations of specialists in the field, and served to foster connections between different institutions and professionals.
Dr. Prahov presented on the topic “Conservation Challenges before the Submerged Heritage of Nessebar on the Western Black Sea Coast”. During his talk he discussed the results from the field school for Underwater Archaeology in the Black Sea, organized by the Balkan Heritage Foundation and the Bulgarian Center for Underwater Archaeology, and their contribution towards the study, preservation and promotion of the city’s maritime heritage. Dr. Prahov also highlighted the potential for turning the submerged monuments from the ancient Greek colony Mesambria into a tourist destination and the conservation challenges that such an undertaking would raise.
