CONSERVATION AND RESTORATION OF ROMAN AND LATE ROMAN POTTERY FROM STOBI (2009 – PRESENT), REPUBLIC OF NORTH MACEDONIA
In 2009 the Balkan Heritage Foundation started a pottery conservation project in collaboration with the National Institution Stobi, North Macedonia. In the focus of the project are Roman and Late Roman vessels from recent excavations at Stobi, as well as previously conserved ones, in a condition for reconservation. Since 2009 more than 100 vessels were conserved and restored by the Balkan Heritage affiliated conservator Nina Turlakova (2009-2013) and the National Institution Stobi conservator Biljana Jankulovska-Peeva, supported by students in the international field school for conservation of Roman pottery organized by the Balkan Heritage Foundation.
The pottery originates from excavations of the “Western necropolis” of Stobi and the ”House of Peristeria”. They were excavated mainly in 2009, 2011 and 2012 campaigns, thus representing only small portion of the total amount of material discovered in aforementioned campaigns. A catalog publication with description and illustration of most of the conserved vessels is on its way in 2016!
The Field School for Conservation and Restoration of Roman and Late Roman Pottery is ongoing project, open for participants with interests in Conservation, Classical Archaeology, Museology, Art History, etc. For more information visit BHFS web site.
Until 2016 more than 25 participants in this project received hands on experience and were introduced to contemporary pottery conservation, restoration and documentation methods and standards of work.
