The exhibition “Beyond Yesterday” An Anthropological Walk Retracing the Path of the Manakia Brothers in the Early 1900s
On April 3, 2026, the Regional Ethnographic Museum in Plovdiv, Bulgaria hosted the opening of the exhibition “Beyond Yesterday: An Anthropological Journey in the Footsteps of the Manaki Brothers in the Early 20th Century.” Its author is the Romanian anthropologist Dr. Catalin D. Constantin. The event was attended by the Ambassador of Romania to Bulgaria—H.E. Ms. Brândușa Ioana Predescu, the Honorary Consul of Romania in Plovdiv—Dimitar Beleliev, the Honorary Consul of Ukraine in Plovdiv, Dimitar Georgiev, and the Deputy Mayor for Culture of Plovdiv, Mr. Plamen Panov.
The exhibition represents a unique journey through time, tracing the path of the Manaki brothers and the life of the Vlach communities in Macedonia and Epirus at the beginning of the last century, as documented by them. To this end, the same places and views were photographed from the same angles, but through Dr. Konstantin’s modern lens. The “Balkan Heritage” Foundation contributed to bringing this exhibition to Plovdiv, where Yanaki Manaki lived during World War II and had a studio. Through the mediation of Ivan Vassilev (Executive Director of the Foundation), Dr. Konstantin established contact with the Ethnographic Museum in Plovdiv, and during the preparation of the exhibition, two portraits were discovered that were previously unknown to be the work of Manaki.
The exhibition will be open until April 20, 2026.
На 03 Април, 2026 г. в Регионален Етнографски музей – Пловдив, беше открита изложбата „Отвъд вчера” Антропологична разходка по стъпките на братята Манаки в началото на 20-ти век. Нейният автор е румънският антрополог д-р Каталин Д. Константин. На събитието присъстваха посланичката на Румъния в България – Н. Пр. госпожа Бръндуша Йоана Предеску, почетният консул на Румъния в Пловдив – Димитър Белелиев, почетният консул на Украйна в Пловдив – Димитър Георгиев и заместник-кмета по култура на Пловдив – г-н Пламен Панов.
Изложбата представлява своеобразно пътуване във времето проследяващо пътя на братя Манаки и документирания от тях живот на влашките общности в Македония и Епир в началото на миналия век. За целта са заснети същите места и гледки от същите ракурси, но през вече модерния обектив на д-р Константин. Фондация “Балканско наследство” има своя принос за гостуването на тази изложба в Пловдив, където Янаки Манаки живее по време на Втората световна война и има свое ателие. Чрез посредничеството на Иван Василев (изпълнителен директор на Фондацията) д-р Константин осъществява контакт с Етнографския музей в Пловдив, а по време на подрежадането на изложбата са открити два портрета, за които досега не се знае, че са дело на Манаки.
Изложбата може да бъде посетена до 20 април, 2026 г.
